Mundo Alebrije is a walk-around reading adventure in Spanish, made by Ms. Henk’s Class. You make a character, pick a first creature, and head into the tall grass. Something jumps out, a word comes up, and reading it is how you win.
The creatures are inspired by alebrijes, the brightly painted folk-art animals from Mexico. Every one is a real animal covered in patterns, so a cat still looks like a cat and “gato” means something. The rare ones and the bosses grow wings and horns.
How You Play
- Make a character and choose a first alebrije: a puma, a bear or a toad.
- Walk through the tall grass until a creature appears, fish in the water for sea creatures, or fish in the lava for creatures made of fire.
- Read to win. Some rounds show a word and you tap the matching picture. In others a voice says a sentence and you find the word you heard.
- Win, then find the creature’s name to catch it and add its card to your collection.
- Beat each land’s boss to move the rock and open the next land, all the way to the top.
- Spend your coins at the store on sombreros, luchador masks, capes and wings, or paint your alebrije a new color.
What Kids Practice
- Reading Spanish in the order it’s usually taught: vowels, then syllables like ma, me, mi, mo, mu, then words.
- Only letters they’ve met. Each of the 13 reading levels adds something new, and every word uses only letters taught so far. Sounds like ñ, ch, ll and rr each get their turn.
- Reading for meaning. On the silent rounds nothing is spoken, so the only way to the right picture is to read the word.
- Extra practice on hard words. Words a player misses come back more often until they stick.
- A little addition. The creature hospital asks simple sums, read aloud in Spanish.
Made by a Class
It runs on the same engine as Jack & Rafa’s Monster World, with its own 337 Spanish words and 118 creatures. All the art is pixel art drawn by code, with no image files.
It’s vibe-coded, which means it was built by describing it in plain words to an AI, in this case Claude, and trying it out until it was right.

Questions About Mundo Alebrije
What Age Is Mundo Alebrije For?
It’s made for kids about 4 to 6 who are learning to read in Spanish. The words start short and easy, and a voice talks kids through the game.
Does My Child Need to Speak Spanish Already?
It helps. The game teaches reading, so it works best for kids who already know many of these words from home or a dual-language classroom. Kids newer to Spanish can play with a grown-up, using the pictures and the voice.
What Spanish Does It Use?
Mexican Spanish, both in the voice and in word choices like elote, chango, tecolote and papalote.
Is Mundo Alebrije Free?
Yes. There’s nothing to buy, no sign-up and no pop-up ads.
Does It Work on a Phone or Tablet?
Yes. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install. Turn the sound on, because the voice is a big part of the game.
Does It Save Progress?
Yes. Progress saves in the browser on the device you’re playing on, with no account needed.
